A commemorative memorial service will take place at the County War Memorial on Thursday 8th May 2025 to mark the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. This is an unticketed, outdoor event and the public are invited to attend, with assembly from 10.40am. The laying of wreaths will be led by the Lord Lieutenant and the Council Convener. Wreaths will also be laid by local veterans organisations and visiting dignitaries, including Norwegian representatives in Shetland as part of the Liberation Convoy – a flotilla of historic vessels that will cross the North Sea from Bergen earlier that week. Also taking part in the event will be musicians from Royal Norwegian Naval Bands.
