In honour of commemorating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, Residents, Armed Forces, both past and present came together with Civic guest for a poignant and meaningful event in the Newent.

The event commenced with a Flag Raising Ceremony attended by civic guests. The Mayor welcomed the attendees, followed by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, who read the proclamation before the Town Council’s armed forces covenant lead raised the VE80 Flag, marking the tribute with solemnity and pride.

Following the ceremony, the attendees proceeded through the High Street to the War Memorial within the grounds of St. Mary’s Church. There, Rev. Canon Simon Mason led prayers and solemnly read the names of those from within the parish who had fallen during World War II. The Vice Chair of the Newent Branch of the Royal British Legion gave a moving address, followed by a moving tribute from the Town Mayor.

The commemorations continued with a reception hosted by Newent Association for the Disabled, where Veterans, serving personnel, ambulance staff, civic guests, and members of the public gathered. Over tea and a specially made cake, conversations flowed, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation.
