This illustrated exhibition begins with the Royal Navy, first in the Indian Ocean supporting the British Indian XIV Army in recapturing Burma, and supporting the American advance towards Japan in the Pacific.
It shines a light on the liberation of thousands of prisoners of war, following the Japanese surrender and the signing of the surrender documents. It also highlights how Stockport reacted on VJ Day.
A digital Roll of Honour records Stockport heroes who did not return from the war in Asia, and several who came home after active service or spending three and a half years in Prisoner of War camps throughout Southeast Asia.
The exhibition is displayed at Stockport’s new StockRoom. It is free to enter and aimed at everyone keen to learn about the three months after VE Day and the final end of World War Two.
Stockport Normandy Veterans Legacy belongs to Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation. It aims to educate and communicate with the public about World War Two history especially to school groups and the young generation.
