Preifat Fred Jones at ei frawd Norman

Private Frederick James Jones was killed on 9th June 1944 during D-Day. It wasn’t until his sister Hilda had passed away her granddaughter Sarah asked if I wanted this letter which was sent to my Dad was in a drawer in her house. Uncle Freddie was also on Remembrance Service in 2009 where his mate Bill Evans told a bit of the story over in Normandy:

Bill always said these men are not ever to be forgotten and I always remember him though thankfully he survived WW2.

Freddie was born 28th august 1924 in Neyland Vale, Pembrokeshire, Wales, son of Thomas and Sarah jones – he was one of their 14 children. After he joined up he served with the South Wales Borderers, 2nd Battalion, B Company. His Service Number was 14578536 and was known as 36 Jones. Bill’s said because there was so many Welsh men with same surnames they had to use the Surname and last two number of their Service Number – he didn’t even know his first name.

Uncle Freddie and the battalion landed on Gold Beach in landing crafts on 6th June. He was injured and died of his wounds on 9th June 1944. My nanny Sarah wasn’t the same again, family told me.
