This letter (unfortunately only the first two pages) were found amongst my nan’s (Grace) things. It was written on a Tuesday (no exact date) whilst Grace’s brother Victor had a 24 hour pass and had visited his parents at Preston-on-Wye, Herefordshire. At the time Grace and Arthur (Art) were either in Staffordshire, or later they moved to Warwickshire so he sent them this letter.
He thanks them for the photos of his nephews and talks about how big they must be now and how quiet it must be now both of them are at school (putting the letter after September 1943). He talks about not liking the place he is, “give me Yorkshire any day” he wishes. Victor would end up spend the rest of his life in Yorkshire. He says “Wouldn’t it be grand if this war was over and …we could settle down to a normal life again”.
I think this letter really shows how the lives of ordinary people were affected. The majority of my paternal family were involved in food production so didn’t go to war but letters like this show that everyone was connected to the war and affected by the separation.
