Schools: Our Shared Story

Our Shared Story is a collection of educational resources to support young people to engage with VE and VJ Day 80th commemorations, both inside and outside the classroom. We want every school child in the country to have the opportunity to connect with the stories of the end of the Second World War.

Two girls in a classroom

From the sailors, soldiers and aviators who fought, to children who were evacuated, and all those who stepped into essential roles on the home front, we want young people to hear about their experiences and learn how our life is shaped by the values they fought to defend.

In an increasingly uncertain and fragmented world, this anniversary has never been more important. It is only by learning from conflicts such as the Second World War and listening to their devastating effects from those who experienced them, that we bring to life the realities of war. What motivated millions of ordinary people to fight? What was it like? What were the sacrifices necessary to preserve peace and freedom? And, 80 years on, what does it mean for today’s young people?
