Come along and experience the end of the war in Europe in 1945 with a 90-minute guided walk through Glasgow City centre. From the night that the ‘blackout died ’on 23 April to the official closing of Glasgow’s air raid shelters on the 14th May. Stories and facts gathered about the buildings, streets, squares and people will transport you back in time to the Spring of 1945, 80 years ago.
Featured stories (with many more) include: reaction in Glasgow to Germany’s capitulation and the news that Adolf Hitler was dead, Glasgow’s ‘V’ Day rehearsal, tension and anticipation as the city waited for the ‘proclamation day’ when the holiday could begin, Victory day when one tenth of Glasgow celebrated in the ‘Square’, the night the toilet doors and clothes poles burned! The tour is organised by Dr. Kevin Morrison who has delivered a number of war walks in Glasgow based on his research into how city infrastructures are mobilized in time of conflict in support of a national war effort. There are nine free 90 minute walks on offer, for up to ten people per walk and run from May 8-10th.
