The letter was written by my grandfather, William John Dawes, to his son, my father, William Edward Dawes, on VE Day. It was posted to my father on 10 May 1945. My father was in D Squadron of the 1st King’s Dragoon Guards and was in posted in North Africa and then travelled up through Italy.
My grandfather described the celebrations on VE Day where he lived in Bristol as well as the events taking place nationally.
The letter was found when we were sorting my father’s effects following his death in 2004.
