This is one of a couple of pieces of correspondence sent by my uncle Jack to his sister Rita, (my mum), from, as far as I can make out, Stalag 3 prisoner of war camp.
Flt Eng Sgt Jack English was a member of 57 squadron, flying Lancasters out of East Kirkby, Lincolnshire, and his plane was shot down over Germany the nigh of 27/28 January 1944 . He was taken prisoner on 29 January 1944 and was subsequently in several prisoner of war camps.
He escaped from a forced march from Stalag 357 Fallingbostel going toward Lubeck on 8 April and finally made contact with allied forces on 16 April 1945.
My mum kept the letter,. I’ve always known of its existence and, after she died in 1995, the letter came into my possession.
