Commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe at the York Army Museum throughout May and June. Join in with some, or all, of our programme of activities:
Remembering Victory in Europe – a new exhibition showcasing our regiments and the home front in York, 1 May – 21 June
Children’s craft mornings – follow a VE Day trail, make themed bunting, bookmarks and suncatchers – 10am-12noon 3, 5, 10 & 17 May
Hank and Smudger’s Stories – on VE Day itself join us to experience the breath-taking real-life stories of two of York’s Normandy Veterans in a double-bill of film and live performance by award-winning Everwitch Theatre, in a specially commissioned work to commemorate Victory in Europe. Performances are at 5pm or 7pm on 8th May. Pre-booking via the museum website
Memoirs of a P.O.W – a dramatisation of a British Army Second World War memoir commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe. This memoir offers a glimpse into the lives of prisoners of war, life writing and the ethnic diversity of the veteran community. Performances are at 1pm and 3pm on 10th May. Pre-booking via museum website is advised, but not essential
VE Day 80 Family Activities – during the half-term week there will be a range of VE Day 80 themed activities aimed at families but all are welcome: trails to follow, crafts to make and take home, WW2 objects to handle. Try our Tank-Arcade game and see if you get the highest score, or try your hand at Morse Code and see if you have what it takes to be a code breaker. 24th – 31st May
Sounding Bombe: Enigma Project – violinist Jack Campbell live in concert with music for violin and found-sound, written in collaboration with the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, inspired by the work of Alan Turing. 4pm on 1 June. Pre-booking via museum website advised.
WW2 Family Day – discover WW2 vehicles, equipment and stories with the East Yorkshire Regiment Living History Group 10am-3pm. 7 June
