Salute the Soldier @ Blackstone Road

As part of a research project we discovered a nationwide event called ‘Salute the Soldier’ which was a fundraising morning boosting initiative to encourage local communities to support the war effort. Our local village Portglenone held a parade and dance raising over £10,000 ( around half a million pounds today!). Many local men served and the local area supported the war effort with local linen and other industries. Our local estate was home to the American Army and other unites were stationed locally.
Our event is to commemorate the service and sacrifice of men and women on both the war and home fronts helping younger generations to understand the role they played. The main event will be a parade of the Blackstone Road from McNeillstown Orange Hall ( an old school which was used by the military during the war) to McNeillstown Independent Orange Hall. Then a beacon will be lit in line with others across the UK and farther afield. A short Service of Thanksgiving will be followed with music from Killycoogan Independent Accordion Band, and a short address to explain the significance of VE Day.
Tea and Coffee will be served with a family evening to reflect on the war, with activities for children and adults alike to capture local memories of the wartime and its impact locally. The theme we have chosen is ‘Salute the Soldier’ as we remember how the local area all came together in the midst of war to support our armed forces as they fought fascism. Today we come together to remember their service and sacrifice and also to support those who serve today.
Finally we are mindful of the thanksgiving services held to give thanks to Almighty God for his deliverance and protection of our nation and will reflect that in our celebrations.
