Harpenden Beacon Lighting – a shared moment of celebration

Thursday 8 May marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the day which in 1945 saw the end of war in Europe and the beginning of the end of WWII.

Along with all other towns and villages in the country, Harpenden has been invited by Pageantmaster Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR to take part in a national celebration of this momentous occasion.

At 9.30pm, parishes across the country will light a beacon to signify the light of peace emerging from the darkness of war.

Join us on Harpenden Common (near the Harpenden Arms) when a tribute will be read out by the Town Mayor as the beacon is lit and we join all those across the nation in singing “I Vow to Thee My Country” followed by the National Anthem.
