Rosina is my grandmother, she had an American fiancé that died during the war in Italy on 4 June 1944, as part of X Troop. He was shot and you can see the bullet holes penetrating the paper which would have been in his pocket. He was buried at Paliano.
This letter was given to me by a relative who my nan had shared the letters with. I believe this man to be the love of my nan’s life despite her marrying the fabulous brother of her best friend Jess whom she met while working at the ammunition factory in Stoke.
Upon hearing the news Jess said “come home with me and meet my brother” – the rest is history. Today, we may call this a rebound.
