Rhoda Jones to her parents

My mother Rhoda Jones wrote this letter to her parents Mr and Mrs Jones and my grandmother (Nain) had kept it. I received it after the death of my mother.

My mother left Wales in her teens to be a receptionist for a doctor in London and went on to do her nurse training at the Central Middlesex Hospital London.

She came from a small holding on a hillside in north Wales. She told us many stories of her time in London and as you can see from her letter she LOVED London. One story she told was how her mother would send her via the train half a dozen fresh eggs which she was astounded to receive not one broken or stolen. They were as rare as hens teeth! I could go on. She was held up at gun point in Casualty one night. I’m not sure why this was but my Mum and a Doctor treated this person and it was not recorded anywhere. On another occasion she was helping a patient back to bed after an air raid. The patients were put under their beds for safety if they were able. This patient said he could feel something itchy down his back and would she have a look to see what it was . She did she took out a long sliver of glass. Luckily the patient did not have a mark on him,it must have blown in during a bomb going off and shoot between his pyjamas and back.

The photo I enclose is my Mum’s nurse training year. She is on the top back row 2nd from left.
