VE Day 80th Anniversary in Saffron Walden – Thursday 8 May 2025
Saffron Walden marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day in style last Thursday 08 May! Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) thanks everyone who joined in for a packed day of celebration, community spirit and remembrance. From the Town Crier’s rousing morning Proclamation to the Beacon Lighting finale in Jubilee Garden, the day was a great success.
Highlights included a moving wreath-laying service with the Royal British Legion; a physical training demonstration with 33 Engineer Regiment EOD&S which included a lively session for all year 5’s from RA Butler Academy. Jasper said, “I think it was really cool as it was an opportunity to get to know what it would be like if we join the army”, Rosie said, “it was fun as you wouldn’t get many opportunities to train with the real military”.
During the afternoon, there was live music from the bandstand in Jubilee Garden; with The Golden Era Jazz Band, The Umbrella Big Band and Wimbish Military Wives Choir hosted by Stuart Vant with free fish and chips from the Trawlerman courtesy of the Royal British Legion and Uttlesford District Council! A special visit to Jubilee Garden was made by 98 year old John Reid from Hatherley Care Home, who served in the Navy during World War 2 – he kindly shared a few stories with the audience. Said a SWTC spokesperson, “it was a pleasure to meet John Reid and we are delighted that he was able to take part. The emphasis of the day was to bring all of the community together, for a shared moment of cross generational commemoration and celebration.”
SWTC extends heartfelt thanks to all participants, performers, organisations, volunteers and to residents who helped make this VE Day Anniversary unforgettable. Special thanks also to; Town Crier, Matt Clare; Bugler John Hammond; host and compere Stuart Vant; and Photographer, Charles Greensitt.
