Several letters from Henry have survived in the family and have been treasured for over 80 years. Recently the letters have been passed on to me, Henry’s great niece. Henry served in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and came from Denaby Main in Doncaster.
In several letters Henry writes home about all the young men from Denaby fighting alongside him in Burma, he asks his parents to let the other mothers know that their sons are well. It is heartbreaking to think that so many men like Henry did not come home.
We have been researching our family tree and along with these letters have really brought Henry to life for us. As it is the 80th commemorations of VE & VJ Day we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Henry to share one of his letters.
