1940s Day commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War centered on the School Museum and Holydyke Air Raid Shelter.
Historic vehicles, live entertainment and children’s activities.
Morale-boosting live entertainment on the home front, conjured up in our ENSA-style Theatre with singers covering hits of the period – from Doris Day and George Formby to Frank Sinatra and Vera Lynn, interspersed with a wartime cinema.
There will be a chance to put on your dancing shoes and give Lindy Hop a whirl in 40s style with our singer and band leader.
Children especially will have pause for thought in the wartime classroom where there’s a chance to feel what it was like for evacuees to Barton, and then explore the “bunker room” with a representation of an Anderson air aid shelter and lots of things to do.
And no wartime event would be worth its salt if it didn’t have off-the ration food and drink which will be available in the NAAFI café and outside in Mr. Wilderspin’s garden playground.
Involvement of local community groups will include the Barton Ukes and the Barton Volunteers who will be showing visitors Barton’s only surviving public air raid shelter five minutes walk from the Museum.
