Calling Blighty Films

To commemorate VJ Day, the Royal Armouries have partnered with the North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University to show two films from the Calling Blighty Series.

The Calling Blighty series of short films, made between 1944 and 1946, shows servicemen (and a very few women) in the Far East recording a message to be watched by their families and friends. These poignant messages were shown in local cinemas back home, to the mixed laughter and tears of the specially invited audiences. A one-way Zoom of their day, these are remarkable and moving documents, bringing these authentic and unscripted voices to the big screen.

The films will be shown on loop from 8 August to 23 August during the opening hours of the Museum 10am-5pm daily) in the War Cinema and are an integrated part of the museum experience, no booking required.

Join us in commemorating the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a special film featuring soldiers from Leeds, York, and Manchester sending messages of love to their families back home during the Second World War.
