DALTON’S WAR DIARY1939-1945 AND POST WAR RECOVERY – POP UP MUSEUM 8-10 May
Commemorates residents resilience, war effort to sustain our way of life and VE -Day. Its 7 themes were:
– an introduction to Dalton’s war,
– timelines Dalton, Furness and World War wide
– everyday life in Dalton
– air raids of 1940 and 1941
– army camps in south Dalton, their transition to post war housing
– 101st Cavalry US National Guard -1st American troops in the Town
– School life, Evacuees, Resettlement of Polish Troops
And separate:
– afternoon tea in the Community Church
– 3 day military badges display, St Mary’s Church
– a Beacon for Peace lighting at High Haume, above Dalton
– Sunday Remembrance service,11 May
Town Centre-wide bunting a retail shop front themed displays competition added to the colour of the VE -DAY week
Dalton with Newton Town Council, Dalton Community Action Group (DCAG), Unite union, GMB Union, Clarence Pub, Lucas Leisure, The Dock Museum, Cumbria Archives (Barrow), MSH healthcare contributed funding, artifacts,, the venue. DCAG coordinated research, marketing and promotion, meeting weekly from February 2025 to 8 May. This included BBC Radio Cumbria and The NW Evening Mail and social media.
A town centre venue – 85 Market Street for the pop-up museum helped ensure its success.
