The Fylde Memorial Arboretum and Community Woodland, located in Bispham, Blackpool, is a place of peace, reflection, and remembrance. Established to honour all who have served in the Armed Forces and civilian services, the Arboretum is home to over 2,500 trees and more than 20 memorial stones and plaques. Each stone tells a unique story, from individual acts of courage to the collective sacrifices of regiments and communities. Maintained by dedicated volunteers and supported by the local community, it is a living, growing tribute to those who have given their all in service to others. The site also serves as an educational and contemplative space for schools, families, and veterans alike.
Every year on August 15th, the Arboretum hosts its VJ Day Service to mark Victory over Japan Day, the day the Second World War truly ended. This poignant service pays tribute to those who fought in the Far East, often under brutal conditions and long after the conflict in Europe had ceased. Many endured captivity, tropical diseases, and immense hardship. For these veterans, VJ Day carries a weight of memory not always recognised during VE Day commemorations. The ceremony is held at the Far East Campaign memorial stone and includes prayers, readings, a moment of silence, and the laying of wreaths. Veterans, standard bearers, local dignitaries, cadets, and members of the public gather together to honour those who did not return, and those who came home forever changed.
This VJ Day Service is not only a solemn remembrance—it is a reaffirmation that their sacrifice is not forgotten. In the quiet of the woodland, beneath the flags and beside the stone, the community stands united in gratitude.
