Hidden London Guided Tour of Clapham South’s Deep Level Shelter

This guided tour is run by London Transport Museum and takes visitors into one of the eight deep-level shelters that were built during the Second World War.

Opened in 1944 and hidden under Clapham South Tube station, this secret underground maze was constructed to shelter over 8,000 people during air raids. Complete with a canteen, medical stations and sleeping quarters, it offered a safe haven in times of war – even though it’s completely hidden beneath the streets of South London.

Visitors can descend 11 stories underground and explore the mile of tunnels of the shelter, including reconstructed areas such as the warden’s cabin, medical bay, and canteen. The tour is led by two expert guides, including one portraying a 1940s ARP Warden and follows in the footsteps of a South London family spending their first night in the shelter.

Available to guests aged 10 and over. Must be booked in advance.
