VE Day 80th anniversary celebration in Kingswood

Towns across the UK are invited to come together on the 8th May to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

18:00 – Gather in the park and bring along a picnic dinner or fish and chips to enjoy.

18:30-19:30 – Music from Sam Eason

19:45 – First lantern of peace lit along with a couple of short speeches and a rendition of ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’. The lantern will be lit by a local scout. Uniformed groups are welcome to attend with their parade flags.

20:00-21:30 – Music from the BEAK band

21:30 – Second lantern of peace lit along with a couple of short speeches and rendition of ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’. (This is the time agreed that nationally a lantern of peace will be lit).

People are welcome to come along to whichever part of the proceedings that they’d like to.

Did you know.. People are encouraged to eat fish and chips on this day because fish and chips were one of the few things that weren’t rationed during WW2 to keep the factories working and to keep up morale during extremely worrying times. The availability of fish and chips, even during a time of scarcity, became a symbol of British resilience and a reminder of simpler times.
