South St Albans Churches are hosting public events on 4th, 5th & 8th May to act as a focal point to commemorate the VE/VJ Day 80th Anniversaries.
4th May – 12 – 5pm St Stephen’s Church
Displays of letters, photographs, journals and local history accounts plus floral tributes in the Church. “Victory Cream Teas” will be served in the Hall with musical accompaniment and optional “sing-along” to favourite songs from WWII.
5th May – 2 – 4.30pm St Bartholomew’s Church
Displays of letters, photographs, journals and local history accounts in the Church. There will be Jive demonstration in the Hall, music and the chance to dance or sing to favourites from WWII.
8th May – St Julian’s Church
9.00am Raise the VE Day 80th Flag
10.30am Community Cafe with WWII themed food
6.30pm Bell ringing
8.00 pm – 10.00pm WWII themed displays in Church with “bring and share” supper
9.30pm Brazier lit to coincide with National lighting of Beacons. Formal Tribute read by Cllr Sandy Walkington
We are encouraging Lunch Clubs and other groups to have a WWII theme during this week. We have a community project to knit, crochet or sew oversized bunting to hang in gardens, local green spaces and at the Churches.
