Kent Archives and Local History Service is located within Kent History and Library Centre; a purpose-built repository in Maidstone, established to protect and provide access to the county’s archives. It houses around 14 kilometres of historic collections, dating back to 699 AD, which reveal the stories of the people and places of Kent. By exploring these documents, you can trace your Kentish ancestors — were they smugglers or pirates? Did they work in a hop garden? Where did they live? Where did they get married? You can receive help to discover the history of your house, your community, local pub, a church, school, or business. We also support academic and legal research.
