Gunner Bill Donaldson to his uncle Alfred and aunt Emily Kindred

My grand father Alfred on my mother’s side Has had the POW cards from William and they were passed down and I took possession and kept them all these years. There are also airgraph letters, but not not too legible.

He served in North Africa in heavy artillery unit. He was captured at fall of Torbruk, and taken prisoner in a Italian war camp. He sent the cards I have attached back to England. His mum was the sister of Alfred’s wife Emily.

At some point he was transferred to a German camp outside East Berlin Stalag IVa. Unsure when. Sometime between August 43 and April 44. As only German pow card is dated 2-4-1944.

He died in the camp 20th June 1944. The storey I was told was from burst appendix. But not confirmed. I know the camp was terribly crammed with prisoners so….

Hope it’s of interest. I tracked down the CWGC burial cemetery as attached.
