Horace William Mills to his wife

The letter was written to mom by dad on the occasion of their wedding anniversary in 1943. It was written in pencil on a scrap of paper whilst he was POW working on the Burma Railway in Thailand (Siam).

I only have a facsimile as the original is with my nephew in Australia. It is quite hard to make out the text but talks of him being sick and being helped by his mates with food and cigarettes. It was written while he was working at Kannyu so I don’t think it ever was sent to mom. Dad must have kept it hidden for the duration which would have been highly dangerous.

I also have an original letter written by him in 1945 upon his release and before he was brought home from Singapore. This is in quite frail shape being 80 years old. If you have any advice how to preserve it I would welcome that.

Both letters were passed to me as I was interested to find out about dad’s war service and visited Singapore and Thailand in 2007 to see the camp site he worked at, helped by the TBRM in Kanchanburi. I have amassed a folder with such information as I could find.
