John Gardiner to his wife Sylvia

My Mum saved the letter for me as she knew it would be of interest to me and the family. They had married on 16 May 1945 when my Dad was due to be home on leave. Imagine their joy that day after hearing that the War in Europe had finished on 8 May 1945 – one week before their Wedding Day.

However, my Dad had to undergo further training before being sent to the Far East and that is where he was when he wrote this letter to my Mum on VJ Day. Their joy at that time was complete knowing that he wouldn’t need to go to the Far East and that they could be together for the rest of their lives – which is what happened.

My Dad had previously written to his girlfriend (my mum) when he was in Canada and saw Churchill’s meeting with Roosevelt.   This letter means a lot to me and my family. Along with the letter (pages 1 and 2) I have attached a photo of my Mum aged 19 when she was in the Land Army and a photo of my Dad with his Mum before he left for his trip to Canada in 1943.
