Ken Buckle’s photo of the surrender of Commander Sakai

My Uncle Ken Buckle served aboard HMS Nelson during the war and saw action defending the Russian Convoys (where he fell into the sea) and during the D-day landings when the Nelson shelled the beach before the landings.

He was present during the Japanese surrender of Singapore in August 1945 at Penang when he was one of the sailors to receive the Japanese commanders as they came aboard HMS Nelson and was handed the sword and arms of one of the officers as they boarded to sign the surrender and obtained a photograph of the Japanese commander boarding which he sent back to his family.

This is the back of the post card that my Uncle Ken sent. He was a man of few words and my grandmother didn’t even know he’d joined the navy until much later as he’d left home before the war. I am guessing that being on board a warship, post must have been hard to send especially considering what HMS Nelson was involved in.
