Olly to Harry Arthur (Bert) Kirby

This is one of a collection of letters I have inherited from my family. Olive (‘Olly’) was my paternal aunt. This letter, from Olly to her husband Bert, is dated 15 Jan 1941 when Bert was receiving military training in Gosport, Hampshire, following his enlistment into the army. Olly makes extensive references to damage caused during the London Blitz to the area where the family lived. It sounds terrifying but Olly still managed to write much about the mundane matters of everyday life. The family home from about 1900 to the early 1960s (when demolished during a period of major redevelopment in the area) was located at 6 Chapman Place, St George in the East, Stepney, London E1. Reference to “the court” relates to Chapman Place. She also referred to a number of other, more well known, locations which were attacked that same night.
