Peter Perkins to his parents

My father Sidney, known as Peter, was in the Far East serving in the Royal Artillery once he became old enough to be called up. He stayed there after VJ Day, still in the army and waiting for a ship to bring him back home.

I have inherited his photo albums and paperwork, which I treasure.

His job was a a truck and personnel driver. He told me that on VJ Day, they were told to line up their vehicles on the shore as a show of victory. He said he hoped the Japanese nearby had also been told that the War had ended – otherwise they would have been sitting ducks!

The photo shows Peter with his vehicle in Batavia, Java 1945.
