Roberts Jones to Gladys Jones

This is a photograph with a note on the back, which has been handed down to me. It was written by my Grandfather, Robert Jones, who served in Mombasa, Kenya during WWII. It was a note for my Grandmother, Gladys.

I was privileged to be part of my grandparents’ lives in previous years. Robert died in 1983, and Gladys in 2002. In 1986, I met my wife Laura, who had grown up in Kenya. We married in 1989, in a garden outside Nairobi. We then went on honeymoon to Mombasa. We didn’t go on honeymoon alone! We also too family members with us, including my grandmother Gladys.

For the first time Gladys was able to see the area where her husband had been stationed many years previously in World War II. Naturally, it was an emotional experience for her.

My grandfather managed to learn a certain amount of Swahili during the war. My wife speaks it fluently. Unfortunately he passed before I met my wife, and the two never met. If only they had.
