Chard Town Council plans to mark VE Day through 2 key events, as outlined below:
The main event takes place Thursday 8th May, when the Town Crier will read his proclamation from the Guildhall balcony at 8am, followed by the raising on the official VE flag at 9am. Activity will start from 7pm at the beacon, with a performance from local veteran and harmonica player, John Gudge. The beacon will be lit at approximately 8:15pm with vocalist and Music School Teacher, Bethany Brown providing her sets either side, bringing the event to a close by 9:30pm. Throughout the event residents and visitors can peruse exhibits from community groups, to include the Royal British Legion, Chard Museum, Chard Army Cadets, Chard Girl Guides, Chard Helmstedt Society, Chard Hospital League of Friends and more.
Sunday 11th May sees Chard Fair take place at the Guildhall. The council is wanting to clarify, this event may have previously been seen under the guise of “Chard Fete”, taking place at Stringfellow Park. There were a selection of factors that went in to the decision to move the location to the Guildhall, but ultimately it is felt a memorable and enjoyable event will be preserved under the cover of the Guildhall, with a selection of traders/exhibitors lining Fore Street’s footway.
Attendees can expect to see an array of community groups with a selection of activities and displays on offer. As well as this, a fantastic line-up of local talent has been secured, which is set to include, Rise Acoustix, Blackdown Morris, Chaffcombe Reservoir Dogs and Stevie Nicole.
