Dated 3 July 1944 while Theo, my father, was serving with the Royal Signals and I believe fighting in Italy at the time having previously been fighting in North Africa.
I found it amongst my father’s treasured possessions on his death. You will see from the PS written by his mother that my dad’s father was dying (from cancer) and only had a few months to live. Unfortunately as my father was serving in the army he wasn’t allowed home on compassionate leave to see his father before he died or to attend his funeral. The letter is interesting because although my grandfather wasn’t well educated (a boot maker by trade) he has a wide vocabulary and he obviously read Kipling well enough to quote him.
