Trooper James William Warburton , 52nd Lowland Reconnaissance Division. Number 14550621
The letter is in a large box of memorabilia kept by my mum. The original collection was held by my paternal grandmother and passed on to my mum when she died . The letters are all to his mother over the period of his active service. The included letter is from 115 British General Hospital in Ostend in April 1944, following his injury as the section crosses the Rhine ( one of the first British sections to cross with the American forces). He was injured by a land mine which exploded when he was backing a vehicle around an obstacle. He was injured in his right hand and right thigh . The letter was written by a nurse due to his injured right hand she assumed he could not write the letter himself. Unknown to the nurse he was in fact left handed !
He served from March 1943, landing in France on 1st September 1944 then demobbed in June 1947. He spent VE Day in the hospital in Ostend .
